At CatholicCare Sydney, our goal is to help keep the community safe by providing advice and resources, particularly for older individuals and those with medical conditions, who are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses and the impacts of natural disasters.
In partnership with the Australian Government Aged Care Quality Commission, we are working to raise awareness of the health risks associated with extreme weather. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for heatwaves, bushfires, flooding, and tropical cyclones this season.
To ensure everyone is prepared and protected during this high-risk season, we’ve gathered valuable tips and
provided direction to helpful resources.
Staying Cool and Hydrated
Hot weather can be harmful, even if you feel fine. Remember to take the following steps to stay cool and healthy:
Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly (even if you don't feel thirsty), and avoiding sugary drinks, alcohol, and caffeine. Eat light meals like salads and fruit.
Use cold packs, and cool showers, or visit air-conditioned public spaces like libraries to stay cool.
Avoid being outdoors during peak heat (11 am - 5 pm), and limit physical activity to cooler hours.
Keep your home cool by closing windows, curtains, and blinds. Spend time in the coolest areas and minimize stove use.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses, and carry water when outside.
Store perishable food in the fridge and manage food during power outages to keep it safe.
Look out for others in your community. It's important to support neighbours, friends or family members, especially those who live alone or are socially isolated.

Home Fire Safety Tips
Fire safety is critical during summer months, especially for those living in bushfire-prone areas. Follow these tips to remain safe:
It takes 30 seconds for a small flame to get out of control. Act quickly as small flames can spread rapidly.
Install and test smoke alarms regularly.
Have a visible escape plan and never leave open flames unattended.
Clean dryer lint filters, and avoid smoking in bed.
Switch off appliances, don’t overload power points, and teach children fire safety.
Store chemicals safely, keep BBQs clean, and clear leaves from gutters.
Know your escape routes and test doors for heat before opening.
Never use a lift during a fire and be familiar with your building’s evacuation plan.
If you’re caught in a fire:
Stay low, get out, stay out.
If your clothing catches fire, remember to: Stop, Drop, Cover, and Roll.
Severe Storms
Storms can happen anytime, so it’s important to prepare year-round. Focus on protecting against key risks like high winds, hail, and flash flooding during storms:
Secure or store items in your yard and balcony.
Clean gutters, downpipes, and drains regularly to avoid blockages.
Trim trees and branches that could fall on your property.
Repair any roof damage, including broken or missing tiles.
Ensure your insurance policy is up-to-date and sufficient.
Create a family emergency plan.
Prepare an emergency kit.
